Hard water
Around 63% of the UK suffer from water that’s classed as ‘hard’ or ‘very hard’. It cakes around heating elements, it furs up pipes, affects heating systems and ruins washing machines, dishwashers, taps and showers. It also creates some unwanted problems for our bodies too. The limescale minerals leave a film on your skin, clogging pores, making it dry and flaky and hair is left dull, limp and coarse.

Most people who have a water softener would simply say that to wash and bathe in scum free water is enough. However, a water softener fulfils many functions and gives significant savings.
The long-term benefits are numerous, including the increased life of appliances, protection of taps, bathroom suites and boilers. Enjoy daily savings on household bills, helped by reducing soap and detergent consumption by up to 50%. Households can save hundreds of pounds a year, with up to 24% savings on energy bills alone.
Yes, it does.
Using soft water will start to remove scale from the moment the softener is installed. The amount of scale already in your home can affect how quickly softened water will get rid of it.
Typically:
• In just a few weeks, scale will be gone from your kettle, if you fill your kettle up from a soft water tap
• In 6 months, scale will be gone from your heat exchanger
• In 18-24 months, scale will be gone from the rest of your pipework
Many people choose to drink softened water. The Regulations require that ‘All premises supplied with water for domestic purposes shall have at least one tap conveniently situated for the drawing of drinking water’. Drinking water must comply with the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000, which stipulate a maximum limit of 200 mg/l (milligrams per litre) for sodium. The provision of an unsoftened drinking water tap is essential where the hardness of the public supply and its sodium content as supplied would result in the softened water exceeding 425 ppm.
Using softened drinking water isn’t recommended for mixing baby feeds or for those on a low-sodium diet prescribed by a medical practitioner.
Any home can have a water softener fitted, no matter what type of heating system they have.
Leading boiler systems manufacturer Worcester Bosch supports this position. You can read more about it here.
